Food During Our First Week in Frankfurt

The babies, as usual, have consumed our time.  So, other than caring for them and getting settled, we have really only ventured out on errands and for food.

However, even with food, we have mostly done carry out/delivery.  We have ordered Sushi, Thai, Pizza, and Pizza and Sushi again.  So far, my favorite has been the pizza - I am just that sophisticated :)  Although, interestingly, the pizza place, San Marco, serves pizza and Indian food, a combination I have not seen before.

The last two days, we have visited two restaurants that serve more traditional German food.

The German restaurant we visited yesterday, Das Wirthaus,  is very good.  It is in the shopping district and has a pub feeling.  The restaurant has started serving asparagus as part of the German asparagus season.  They served my asparagus with sole (fish) and potatoes.  It was very good and it looks like they have a bunch of other fish options to try in the future.  Jon ordered the more traditional Wiener Schnitzel, which Jack made a grab for.  Clearly he has German blood running through his veins.

On the way back, we stopped at Kleinmarkthalle, a German food market that sold a huge variety of fresh food.

We bought some fish and homemade pasta.  We took the subway on the way home (notwithstanding two broken elevators), which marked the boys' first trip on a subway.

Today for lunch, we visited a neighborhood place, Culux, that has vegetarian wurst in a curry sauce (in other words, a vegetarian currywurst).

Currywurst is a German thing, explained well here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Currywurst

It was good, but next time, instead of getting it in the sweet curry sauce, I would get it in the Thai curry sauce (which was an amazing dip for Jon's fries, or pommes).  I was just so excited to find a vegetarian version of a traditional German dish!

So, for the most part, we have had positive dining experiences.  However, we have been frustrated twice  by restaurants that have hours posted indicating that they are open, and then when Jon has gone in, they tell him they are closed (even though there are workers there hanging out).  Strange...

I almost forgot a place we have visited three times - Cafe Caramel.  It is just down the street from us and has space to accommodate the boys' double stroller.  Plus, they have good food (especially breakfast food)!
