Thank you, G-d and thank you to my hero, my husband.

On Saturday, we nearly lost our Izzy. We were at Petsmart, looking for items for Izzy's little brother that we would be bringing home in two weeks. I was pointing at a crate, asking my husband if he thought it would work for the new puppy. No response. I turned to look at him to see if he was paying attention and what I saw made me scream in horror.

A pit bull had its huge teeth on Izzy's neck. My husband was on the ground with his hand between Izzy and this monster. The next thing I knew my husband had pushed the pit bull away, was staring it down, and Izzy was just laying there with her little head between her paws pressed against the floor. I swept her off of the floor to see if she was okay. I never felt so scared. She appeared okay, which didn't seem possible. But it appeared it was so.

Soon a Petsmart person and the owner came running to us. The Petsmart person was a trainer at the store. She apologized - "I'm sorry - we're actually working on her aggression problem toward small dogs and didn't see you were here."

We didn't know what to say. Does apologizing for nearly letting our dog be killed make it all right? And why on earth was a Pit Bull with aggression problems in an un-enclosed training area in public store with people, children and pets nearby? And if it was there, why not on a leash or with a muzzle or something???

At the end of the day, Izzy was left with only superficial puncture wounds - we still have to keep an eye out for infection, but she appears okay. Thank goodness, my husband was there, so quick to act, and that neither she, nor he, were seriously hurt. And thank you, G-d.

Here she is pictured later that day (I think her fur protected her - it confused the Pit Bull and threw off his depth perception, etc.)

By the way, I googled Pit Bull and Petsmart and learned that Pit Bulls had attacked and killed other dogs at Petsmart. I say this not to attack Pit Bulls, but to warn other dog lovers to be very careful if they ever bring their dog to a pet store (or any where for that matter). If bring Izzy again (and that's a huge IF), we will be holding her in our arms, and from now on, I think I'll pick her up if I ever see a dog that I don't know. It's simply not worth the risk. So please don't be offended owners of big dogs (or unknown dogs) if you see me pick up my little girl. It's nothing personal, I just want to protect my baby.
