One Little Raisin

One little raisin put our dear Jaeger at risk when a house guest (with the best of intentions) gave one to Jaeger as a treat. Jaeger happily gobbled it up. Before our guest could give Jaeger another one, we abruptly stopped him. "Raisins are poisonous! You can't give them to dogs," we explained.

Indeed, grapes and raisins are poisonous to dogs and can cause kidney failure and even death. Apparently, grapes and raisins don't affect all dogs to the same extent, but we certainly didn't want to take any chances with Jaeger's health.

I called the Vet and the Vet instructed us to immediately give Jaeger 2-3 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting. I was surprised that we had to do this all for one raisin, but I wasn't going to argue with the Vet. Jaeger happily gobbled up the hydrogen peroxide. I cannot express how terrible my husband and I felt giving him something to intentionally make him sick. Jaeger immediately started dry heaving, but that's it. We had to gave him more. Finally, he started vomiting and the raisin came up.

Jaeger seems do be doing fine, although he was definitely under the weather the rest of that day. Thank goodness we saw the guest give Jaeger the raisin so that we could stop him from giving Jaeger more and stop him from giving any to Izzy (who may have been more at risk given her size).
