Heidelberg, here we come!

On Saturday, we headed to Heidelberg. Heidelberg is only about an hour's train ride away from Frankfurt, so off we went - me, the twins, my husband, and his sister. We didn't have an agenda upon arrival. I have found that we usually have just a couple of hours when we sightsee - we can only be gone from home with the babies so long, and besides, the puppies - Izzy and Jaeger - need us to come back, too. So, we never know what we may see.

Luckily, my husband expertly guided us to the historical area.  It was a bit of a walk - not terrible, but next time, I would try the tram.  Before we made it to the historical district, we walked through a (touristy) shopping area, full of clothing stores, restaurants, and specialty shops.  There was also an art corridor that caught my attention. The galllery I visited didn't list prices on the pieces they showed so that eliminated what small chance there was that I would buy a piece.  Although we have no idea where we will live when we return to Chicago, I think it would be nice to bring back a piece of art from Germany to remember this special time here. Anyway, our first stop was at the Heiliggeist Kirche, a church that from 1705 to 1936 held both Catholic and Protestant services. It was pretty fantstic inside.

As I left the Church, I happened to see the Haus sum Ritter (a mansion built in 1592, now a hotel).

Then we headed to a favorite student pub for lunch, but decided it was a little too rustic for our taste. At the end of the street, we stumbled upon the Alte Brucke Bridge and got some great pictures. After lunch, we walked (mostly) across the bridge and got some more pictures.

Back to lunch. Lunch was so nice. The food wasn't exceptional, but it was nice to just relax, take in the scene and the view (of the bridge in one direction, the church in the opposite, and of my nine month old son trying to steal beer from his aunt). Yes, Will grabbed his Aunt Anna's beer in what was supposed to be an innocent picture of him and his aunt.  The boy would not let go of the beer. He did the same thing later on during lunch.

Although we didn't get to the castle (just saw it from the bridge) or to the University of Heidelberg and the old student jail, and all the other sites, we got to truly savor the moments we had in Heidelberg.

That is until Jon said we had to run to the train station.  LITERALLY.  Jon took off with the stroller (and the boys), leaving his sister and I in the dust.  We tried to keep up but he had at least a couple of blocks on us.  We must have looked absolutely ridiculous.  Silly Americans running down the streets...  Notwithstanding our sprint, we still missed the train.  But that was okay, we caught another train that just required us to change trains (way easier said than done with two babies and a huge double stroller).  Lots of happy memories from this trip to Heidelberg!
